Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others got wounded in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He believed the blast had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
