Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward observing their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it respected the economist's decision to depart.
"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of Congress voted on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its files on the case.
The bill will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to sign the measure, after modifying his stance on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago referenced multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to introduce the official to notable world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the wider community, the former official stated he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and fix bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The professor held leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from five years and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public duties recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that Summers was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He joined the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO the company leader.
