It's somewhat awkward to admit, but here goes. Several books sit by my bed, each only partly consumed. On my phone, I'm partway through over three dozen listening titles, which looks minor alongside the nearly fifty ebooks I've left unfinished on my digital device. The situation doesn't account for the growing stack of early editions next to my coffee table, competing for endorsements, now that I work as a published author in my own right.

Starting with Determined Reading to Intentional Abandonment

Initially, these stats might seem to support recent opinions about today's concentration. An author noted recently how effortless it is to break a person's concentration when it is fragmented by online networks and the 24-hour news. They remarked: “Maybe as people's attention spans change the writing will have to adapt with them.” However as someone who once would stubbornly get through any title I started, I now regard it a human right to set aside a story that I'm not enjoying.

Our Limited Span and the Glut of Possibilities

I don't feel that this habit is due to a short focus – instead it stems from the sense of existence passing quickly. I've often been affected by the Benedictine maxim: “Keep the end daily before your eyes.” One point that we each have a only 4,000 weeks on this world was as shocking to me as to anyone else. And yet at what previous point in our past have we ever had such direct access to so many amazing creative works, whenever we choose? A wealth of riches greets me in each bookstore and behind each device, and I strive to be intentional about where I focus my attention. Is it possible “DNF-ing” a novel (abbreviation in the literary community for Did Not Finish) be not a indication of a poor intellect, but a selective one?

Reading for Empathy and Reflection
